Artigianato di Gonçalo - Guarda
Since remote times, the population of Gonçalo, a parish in the municipality of Guarda, has been working with lintel and wicker, molding these raw materials into different art forms. Basket weaving in Gonçalo is a centuries-old tradition and until the recent past it was still the main activity in the village. It is believed that the vast majority of basket weavers that exist in Portugal had their roots in this location. Any basketmaker in Gonçalo learned, from a very young age, to weave, in an arduous but skillful way, the ends of lintel or wicker which, with art and ingenuity, intertwine delicately around molds, called “forms”. This art, executed with the help of the most diverse tools and mastery passed down from generation to generation, results in the famous Gonçalo Basket. With the emergence of new materials, such as plastic, the basket fell into disuse and thus began the crisis in basketry. Nowadays, basketry continues to be a characteristic feature of the village of Gonçalo, being rooted in its history. Despite not having the same presence of other times, it continues to be produced by the skillful hands of older people, who refuse to lower their arms and let tradition die.

Il Passato e L’arte dei Cestai di Gonçalo
Fernando Pereira è in pensione e ha una storia di vita legata alla cesteria di Gonçalo. Ha imparato presto l’arte di modellare i germogli di castagno e i vimini, creando diversi tipi di cesti per gli usi più diversi. Nel corso del video, spiega l’importanza che quest’arte ha assunto nell’economia locale, poiché veniva insegnata ai giovani della regione e i genitori spesso pagavano gli artigiani per insegnare ai loro figli. Questa antica attività artistica è una tradizione che, si crede, proviene da un tempo molto precedente all’occupazione romana, in un’epoca in cui Gonçalo si trovava a Castro e dove i cesti erano già utilizzati come utensili quotidiani, mentre attualmente sono in declino.

Un’arte Appresa in Gioventù
Felismina Branco è in pensione e si è dedicata alla cesteria fin dalla più tenera età. Ci spiega com’era la sua vita lavorativa nella cesteria, come richiedeva molte ore di occupazione al giorno. Conosce meglio di chiunque altro i materiali che possono essere utilizzati per creare i cesti. Ci dice che la cesteria ha perso l’importanza dei vecchi tempi. Non c’è più nessuno che fa i cesti, solo gli anziani e sempre meno persone ogni giorno.
